have also ordered this, just waiting for it to arrive, from the few bits I've seen on line it seems a bit closer to Sharp Practice 1st edition with the way they have a card and not dice based event deck to cope with, apparently its reasonably tightly written as well, but not in a "Barker" kind of way as in its still readable.

likely using the Anglo Saxon lot as generic 'filthy bods with spears and shields' for now, will just need to mark up a few as leader types

this has now landed...

ohhh this looks a good one

think Sharpe Practice as a base, you still have the random diced for events, but you also have a deck of intrigue cards you can play to help yourself or hinder your opponent at key moments. you also start with the flag cards in your hand, as they are used they get added to the deck to draw from each turn.

Sharp Practice has "drill" (allowing formation changes etc) and "step out" allowing faster movement, Imfamy keeps Step out, but changes drill to "Aggressive Assault", so you can burn flags to make some units fight harder. you also have 'fervour', which is sort of like negative shock.

you have the level 1-4 leaders as with SP, but also have a special leader who is part of a unit and cannot leave it, in effect a level 0 leader who can only ever impact that unit

base book has a simple campaign system included, and a scenario generator system for more normal games.

from a quick read this looks very good, and most of the scenarios will have a bit more than a stand up fight to them.

lists for Rome (two of them), Gauls, Britons and Germanic tribes. apparently two more books due out to cover a wider period

have the tokens to replace the cards, priming them white today, will add a bit of colour next week while I try to work out the models needed and if I have them, and where they are - I can see a box or two of models dedicated to this, a SAGA army from the ancients period seems the perfect foundation to start from

Oh dear it happened again.
Hooked by the lardies.

Finally started on the figs I got from Colin ages ago.

28mm Ancient British

Level III leader
Level II leader

2 x 10 Noble warriors
2 x 10 Tribal warriors
1 x 10 Tribal levy
1 x 6 Tribal slingers
1 x 6 Tribal Cavalry

That is the main force from the army list but also got more slingers, fanatics and cavalry.

Got a small Roman force as well from the conquest of Gaul started set.

Loving what I have seen so far.

it went really well, I did discover, as you do, a mahossive mistake.. I have found out what "mixed weapons" means and where it is defined... my lot today should have had ranged attacks from the main blocks and the cavalry, just about everyone gets them - one dice for every two models - main difference being Romans can through Pila as a reaction, Barbarians can't just when activated..

have some actual Gauls coming so can stop proxying the Anglo-Saxons, plus maybe make a few actual commanders

a lot of smaller units get a "leader" but integral to the unit so no need for a specific model as such

certainly a good start to a force there, I think the starter force I had was:

1x Level III (Warlord)
2x 6 noble cavalry

1x Level II
1x 10 noble warriors
2x 10 warriors

1x 6 slingers (I used archers, a mistake, slingers are way better)

you then add support to that so you should be well away

Agree on Impetus as well, I always wanted a small Roman army...

It looked great.
I guess pretty much any barbarian force running into a formed block of Roman's is in trouble.

Cant wait to get em in a wood though.

I just got my cavalry to put together for basic force then gonna do some Roman's as Andy from gimps fancies a demo.
Could be some time to get em painted though.

Then I need more marsh and wood.

Well, that was a turn up.
Just found the British Cavalry, hey were in a box of stuff I had put to one side.

As the British are nearly put together I was thinking of the Romans and realised I needed some more stuff including Archers.
Had forgotten I had a couple of blisters of them from a stalled SAGA force I was planning.

Just shows what we all probably have hidden away.
